Livestock Exchange

Session 5: THURSDAY

14:30 – 15:45 'Livestock Market Opportunities for the Poor' [Tent]
Overview –Steve Staal: Lessons, Reflection, Future Perspectives

Participant debate, sharing, reflection on issues related to:

  • Demand for livestock products
  • Value chains and innovation systems
  • Competiveness and uptake of livestock technologies
  • Livestock trade and SPS

Inputs based on four briefs:

  1. Animal-source foods in the developing world: demand for quality and safety
  2. Smallholder competitiveness and market-driven uptake of technology: strong now, but having to raise the game going forward
  3. Changing approaches to pro-poor livestock market development: Innovation and upgrading in the value chain
  4. The interface of market access and SPS requirements: lessons from recent ILRI research

PROCESS

Facilitation: Ewen

  • (5 min) Introduction of the session by Steve - where it fits in the ILRI and overall livestock agenda, how it ties in with other themes, what this session hopes to achieve: priorities for future research.
  • (20 min) Presentation (by Steve) of the key elements of the briefs. 3-4 min for each of the briefs and they focus on:
    • 1-2 key lessons;
    • 1-2 strong signs of evidence;
    • 1-2 research gaps identified;
    • Final take by Steve on what seem some strong pointers for the future and where we might need to re-think our approach or do more research
  • (45 min) Group work / World café: evidence and focus for livestock market opportunities (facilitated by Ewen)
    • World café with 9 tables of 8 to 14 people.
    • The tables are arranged in a sort of grid with as X a continuum from 'I am not involved at all to I am very closely involved in this work about livestock market opportunities for the poor' and as Y a continuum from 'I'm interested in conceptual issues to I'm interested in practical issues'.
    • 3 rounds (20 + 15 + 15 min) to discuss:
      • What are the knowledge gaps where more research and evidence are needed? Are we missing any key issues?
      • Where we have evidence, what should our priorities be to have most positive impact for the poor?
      • Are there new partnerships or audiences we should be targeting? How do we better leverage evidence for impact?
    • At each round, participants are welcome to freely move along the continuum to reflect their level of involvement or their level of interest in practical vs. conceptual issues.
  • (5 min) Key take-homes (facilitated by Ewen) looking at the practical/conceptual and weak/strong involvement spectrum; closure of the session, gathering 4-6 key insights (in addition to the notes taken during the discussion).
