Overview – Delia Grace: Lessons, Reflection, Future Perspectives

Participant debate, sharing, reflection on issues related to:

• Agriculture-associated diseases;
• Food safety;
• Emerging infectious diseases;
• Zoonoses of neglected populations;
• One health;
• Outputs to outcomes and impact;
• Video link with John McD for 10 mins.

PROCESS: Hard talk
Facilitation: Delia Grace, (Ewen Le Borgne for evaluation and on standby/demand)

• (2 min) Introduction by Delia. - “name & role, purpose of the meeting (reflection but forward thinking to help strategise), but first we would like to hear from ILRI staff not present on the topic of the session & ILRI’s role”. Objective: to introduce session and state its objective
• (6 min) VideoSkype link with John (introduced by Delia), presenting his vision - John his vision for crp4 and ILRI’s role. Objective: for john to share his vision on CRP 4 and what it means for ILRI
• (7 min) Vox populi video introduced by Delia - FILM: show film – Acho, Alan, Cyprien, Alice & one other. It should be showing opening during introduction so it can start playing immediately Objective: to include perspectives of ILRI staff not present.
• (10 min) Brian inviting prompting the audience to react to the video and John's address.
• (30-35 min) Hard talk by Brian: what we learned from the past, what should we be doing, what shouldn’t we be doing. Brian independent and free to ask searching and challenging questions and also give his reflections on past and present. Objective: to discuss past experience and future plans in a challenging yet constructive way
• (15-20 min) ILRI group voting facilitated by Ewen.
  • Form groups of 4-5;
  • Discuss among yourselves and formulate together (on a card) the most important strategic advice for ILRI's emerging agricultural and health programme.
  • Feel free to add (on another card) an additional key question or issue you'd like to flag!
  • We will pin down your suggestions on a board later on today.

Key clusters in this strand of work are:

• Food associated diseases: salmonella, e.coli, brucellosis...
• Zoonotic diseases: Avian flu, Cysticercosis, tuberculosis...
• Emerging diseases...
• New diseases: swine fever, SARS etc.
• Occupational diseases.

Consider also diseases that move from people to animals e.g. reverse zoonosis?

Where is ILRI going with the livestock and human health agenda?



The vision of CRP 4 is to change agricultural research and practice so that it contributes much more to improving nutrition and health for the poor and particularly for children and women, a.o. by increasing micronutrients of staple crops, using value chains etc.

Session outcomes

ILRI's potential role:

• Keep focusing on epidemiology, diagnostics and surveillance
• Bring other important perspectives for ILRI around value chains,
• Bring ILRI’s experience in informal and emerging value chains, how to weigh the benefits vs. the risks etc.
• Understanding what is changing in developing countries and the disease risks associated with these changes.
• Key livestock systems have potential for livestock disease changes e.g. in pig systems etc.
